His heart was buried there under a mpundu (also called mvula) tree by his loyal attendants Chuma, Suza Mniasere and Vchopere, before they departed for the coast carrying his body.〔David Livingstone and Horace Waller (ed.): ''The Last Journals of David Livingstone in Central Africa from 1865 to his Death''. It was cut down by Robert Codrington who had been sent by the British Commissioner Alfred Sharpe to prepare the way for a permanent memorial.
